a message to Mr. Stephen King

By Robbie on November 29, 2009

My 12-year-old thinks that the English language was just being given a test run by Chaucer, Shakespeare, Churchill, et al, before being perfected by you. His bookshelf is heavy with, and his brain fogged by, your demented scenarios. Thus your endorsement of my song "Fountains of Wayne Hotline" in Entertainment Weekly magazine last week has earned me a lot of Strange New Respect around here. The admiration of a contemporary pre-teenager, as you surely know, is hard to earn. When you are not only his dad but a country music singer, it's just about impossible. So thank you, and by all means, keep it coming!

Fountains of Wayne just came up today on my iPod shuffle as I drove home from my Thanksgiving weekend in Urbana. It made me smile! So clever, Mr. Fulks.

    Hi Robbie.
You probably don't remember me. We met when you were visiting Marcela at Hampshire College, circa 1982! I subscribe to EW, and always anxiously await Stephen King's column (which, sadly, is not weekly). When I saw your name in his Top 10 list it inspired me to look you up. I still remember the first verse of a song you wrote back then:

Robin Paige is no great sage,
nor is she free from vice.
At least she doesn't seem that way,
    I've only met her twice.

Anyway, it looks like you're doing well, and I'll be ordering some of your music.
    Cheers!
